Portavadie Circular(photo)

A lovely walk firstly through mixed woodland then open terrain with good views; finishing along the coast (where lunch may be taken).

Terrain: forest, open road and coastal moorlands which could be muddy in places.  

Distance: 12 km, duration 4 hrs, tot ascent 124 m to max ht. 110 m.

Start point: Car park at Portavadie ferry terminal (1˝  hrs drive from Helensburgh).

Ferry: dep Tarbert 1015 arr P’vadie 1040 hrs (CHECK timings) – for Mid Argyll & Kinross Gp.

It is emphasised that ‘A’ grade walks are strenuous and should only be attempted by those with high standards of fitness and stamina and who are also properly equipped and clothed for the conditions.

Leaders will quite properly turn away those who do not meet these standards as they could create difficulties or danger for other members of the group

Ben Vane from Beinn Mheadhan (Middle Hill)

From start point along A82 to Loch Sloy private road and along road for 2 km to start of climb. Up a steep hillside to summit. Return by outward route.

Terrain: Private road, steep grassy hillside with some easy scrambling near top.     

Distance: 15˝ km, duration 6 hrs (+), total ascent 880 m to max. ht. 915m.

If winter conditions, crampons and ice axe required.

Start point: Car park by Loch Sloy power station, Inveruglas

Killin Forest Circular

Extended circular forest walk starting at car park close to bridge at Falls of Dochart.  Terrain: initially on cycleway with the main and remaining section on rough forest tracks.     

Distance: 14 km, duration 4 – 5 hrs, total ascent 220 m to max. ht. 350m

Start point: first car park on right hand side after B827 bridge crossing of River Dochart at Falls of Dochart.   OS Map 51 / Explorer 378, grid ref: 572327.

Garbh Bheinn (Rough Hill)

A walk on trackless grassy hillside with rocky outcrops; a steep descent.    

Distance: 6 km, duration 5 ˝ hrs, tot ascent 800 m to max ht. 867m.

Start point: Ice Factor car park Kinlochleven,

Glen Sherup

A gentle B walk over undulating, grassy hills with some good views.

Terrain: forest roads and grassy paths.

Distance: 15 ˝ km, duration: 5 hrs, tot ascent 600 m to max ht. 645m.

Start point: Forestry car park on A823 in Glen Devon about 1 mile west of Glen Devon Village signposted Glen Sherup. Leave A9 c 2miles north of Blackford onto A823 signed Dunfermline. Approx 1hr 20 mins  from H’burg OS Map 58, grid ref 973052

Lomond Hills Circular

An upland walk through Fife Regional Park, taking in East and West Lomond, with classic views over Loch Leven, the Firth of Forth and Falkland Palace.

Terrain: a combination of hill tracks, moorland and open hillside, with two short but steep grassy ascents.      Distance: 16 km, duration 6 hrs, tot ascent 590 m to max ht. 522 m.

Coille Coire Chuilc

Another attempt at this walk which was washed out by floods last November.

Good views of Beinn Dubhcraig, Beinn Dorain and Beinn Odhar  during this walk which passes through remnants of the Caledonian pinewoods and follows parts of the River Cononish.

Terrain: Forestry tracks and paths (albeit faint ) all the way – some burns to cross. If impassable (as last November)  there is an alternative return route.

Distance: 10.5 km, duration 4 – 4 ˝ hrs, ascent 380m to max ht of around 450m.

Start point: Dalrigh car park, on W. of A82 1.5 km S. of Tyndrum.
