Title and Description

It is emphasised that ‘A’ grade walks are strenuous and should only be attempted by those with high standards of fitness and stamina and who are also properly equipped and clothed for the conditions.

Leaders will quite properly turn away those who do not meet these standards as they could create difficulties or danger for other members of the group.

Meall nan Caora (Hill of the sheep)

Initial pathway followed by steep grassy slope to plateau. Cross plateau descending by steep trackless slope to main track, returning to start point.

Terrain: Stalkers’ tracks but mainly grassy areas with very steep slopes up and down.

Distance: 13 km, duration 6 hrs, total ascent 700m to max. ht 722m.

Start point: Very limited parking 1km north of Drovers Inn, Inverarnan. Distance from H’burgh: 28 miles.

Hill of Stake, Muirshield

Unmetalled road, undulating open moorland.

Terrain: Rough track, grass/heather moorland may be wet in places.

Distance: 11 km, duration 4 hrs, total ascent 320 m to max. ht. 522 m.

Start point: Car park at Muirshield Country Park Visitor Centre, Inverclyde. Distance from H’burgh: 34 miles.

Stob Coire an Lochain

From car park strike directly up defined south ridge path to summit. Return by same route. Options to go on to Stob Binnein or horseshoe ridge to Meall na Dige, depending on conditions.

Terrain: Steep grass with rocky outcrops. Path for most of the ascent. Long day if all tops included.

Distance: 8 km, duration 6 hrs, total ascent 1000m to max. ht 1068 m.

Start point: Inverlochlarig car park, west of Balquhidder. Distance from H’burgh: 50 miles.

Inverlauren Wood and Glen Fruin Circular

A part of the Three Lochs Way.

Terrain: A mixture of stoney tracks, rough moorland and moorland paths with a short section of minor tarmac roadway. Can be muddy in places.

Distance: 11 km, duration 4 hrs, total ascent 190m to max ht. 200m.

Start point: Car parking area at Council Depot opposite reservoir car park, Helensburgh. Distance from H’burgh: 1˝ miles.

Beinn Tharsuinn & Beinn Chaorach

From farm, climb to top via Auchengaich Hil and Beinn Tharsuinn. Descend quite steeply to the old shielings by reservoir and back on road to start.

Terrain: Trackless hill and could be boggy by reservoir. Track and then tarmac road.

Distance: 11 km, duration 6 hrs, total ascent 600m to max. ht 713m.

Start point: Old Glen Fruin Road at Ballevoulin Farm. Distance from H’burgh: 5 miles.
