Killin – Glen Dochart Forest Circular

Outward section along route of National Cycle Track with inward section on two sections of former railway track.

Terrain: Cycle track then disused railway track bed.  Railway track could be muddy in one section, dependent upon weather.  

Distance: 8 km, duration 3 hrs, total ascent 130 m to max ht. 300 m.

Start point: Car park opposite Glenogle Cottage on A85.

Beinn Ime (butter hill) (photo)

A walk up the glen behind the Cobbler and up to the top of Beinn Ime.

Terrain: Mountain path and steep grassy hillside.     

Distance: 8 km, duration 5 ˝ hrs, total ascent 1020 m to max. ht. 1011m.

Start point: Layby ˝ way up Rest and be Thankful.  Overspill parking short distance beyond.

It is emphasised that ‘A’ grade walks are strenuous and should only be attempted by those with high standards of fitness and stamina and who are also properly equipped and clothed for the conditions.

Leaders will quite properly turn away those who do not meet these standards as they could create difficulties or danger for other members of the group

The Dalmally Horseshoe (Ben Cruachan and Stob Diamh) Stacky Hill and Peak of the Stag

A high level traverse taking in 5 summits, including the two Munros, and featuring in Bill Birkett’s “Great British Ridge Walks”.  Classic views over Loch Awe and the Pass of Brander.    

Terrain: Rough track up to the Cruachan Dam, then steep mountain paths.  Parts of the main ridge are narrow and rocky, and some easy scrambling may be required.

Distance: 15 km, duration 8 hrs, total ascent 1490 m to max ht. 1126m.

Start point: Limited parking to the east of the Cruachan Dam Visitor Centre on the A85.

Ballachulish Horseshoe (Sgorr Dhearg and Sgorr Dhonuill) Red peak and Donald’s peak(photo1) (photo2)

From Ballachullish School up nose of Sgorr Bhan on to Sgorr Dhearg and along to Sgorr Dhonuill.  Head north to South Ballachullish. Two car walk through.

Terrain: Hill and rock to start.  Come off in forest.

Distance: 12 km, duration 8 hrs, total ascent 1268 m to max ht. 1024m.

Start point: At Ballachullish school. Pick up cars at South Ballachullish.

The Peninsula Way (Garelochhead to Kilcreggan)

A linear walk down the length of the Rosneath Peninsula.  Return to Garelochhead by service bus.

NOTE – Bus fare or pass will be needed for bus back from Kilcreggan to Garelochhead.

Terrain: Woodland paths, some rough and wet, and forest tracks. One steep, grassy climb of approximately 70m height.

Distance: 13 km, duration 4 ˝ hrs, total ascent 540 m to max ht. 180 m.

Start point: Garelochhead car park.

Beinn a’Chaisteil  (Hill of the Castle) and Beinn nam Fuaran (Hill of the Well) (photo)

After crossing a ford the route follows a firm track just beyond its end half way up Glen Coralan.  A long, fairly steep, but grassy climb leads onto the ridge and a less severe grass ascent to summit.  Continuing on grass over the next summit, a descent is made into the Auch Gleann and a return along a rough track to end with recrossing that ford over the Allt Coralan.

Terrain: Rough tracks but mainly trackless grassy slopes, often steep but essentially rockfree.

Distance: 16 km, duration 7 ˝ hrs, total ascent 940m to max ht of 883m.

Start point: Green Welly Stop on A82 at Tyndrum to sort out cars. A max of 6 can be parked at Auch Estate with permission.
