It is emphasised that ‘A’ grade walks are strenuous and should only be attempted by those with high standards of fitness and stamina and who are also properly equipped and clothed for the conditions.

Leaders will quite properly turn away those who do not meet these standards as they could create difficulties or danger for other members of the group

Beinn Tulaichean and Cruach Ardrain (Hill of the Hillocks and Stack of the High Part)

The mountain is approached by the trackless but wide south-east ridge, over grass first then crags and boulders leading to the crest just south of the Tulaichean summit. The grassy ridge path is followed NNW to reach the summit of Cruach Ardrain. The return is south to a bealach and then drops east to a track beside the Inverlochlarig burn.

Terrain: Steep grassy moorland and rocky mountain ridges.  

Distance: 11 km, duration 5½ hrs, total ascent 1030 m to max ht. 1046 m.

Start point: Car park 3/4km east of Inverlochlarig farm.

Croy Hill and Bar Hill

A varied route following the Antonine Wall over these two hills and also with sections of woodland and canal towpath, mostly using footpaths and short sections of roads. We will look at the Roman remains on Bar Hill.

Terrain: Tracks and grassland.     

Distance: 13 km, duration 4½ hrs, total ascent 200 m to max. ht. 155m.

Start point: Auchinstarry quarry car park, Kilsyth.

Glen Dochart to Kirkton Glen

A different approach to Rob Roy's grave and the reverse of the walk taken in heavy snow in March 2006. Starting at Ledcherrie farm on the A85, leading to the pass to Lochan an Eireannaich (Lake of the Irishman) and through Kirkton glen to Balquhidder.    

Terrain: Sometimes faint tracks over grassy and probably boggy moorland areas with an easy ascent to the lochan and thereafter good paths and forest tracks.

Distance: 16 km, duration 5 hrs, total ascent 400 m to max ht. 600m.

Start point: Ledcherrie Farm on A85 (Crianlarich to Lochearnhead road)

Ben Lawers and Beinn Ghlas (Hill of the stream and Greenish-grey hill)

From Horn shop follow the path by the Lawers burn to Lochan nan Cat then climb to Ben Lawers. Follow path to bealach then on to Beinn Ghlas. The path descends to the start at the NTS Lawers visitor centre.

Terrain: Path and hillside. Could be wet in places.

Distance: 13 km, duration 6½ - 7 hrs, total ascent 1150 m to max ht. 1215m.

Start point: NTS Lawers visitor centre to set up cars for this linear walk..

Stuc Odhar (Dun coloured peak)

Climb up above Loch Venacher in Woodland Trust land using some new paths and open hillside, returning by Glen Finglas reservoir.

Terrain: Waymarked track and open hillside.

Distance: 11 km, duration 4½ hrs, total ascent 650 m to max ht. 626m.

Start point: New Glen Finglas car park on left of A821 0.6 miles east of the post office sign at Brig O'Turk.

Scenery and Wildlife of the Heads of Ayr

A coastal walk from Seafield in central Ayr crossing new footbridge over the river Doon, following the Greenan shore past the ruins of Greenan Castle and then along the foreshore under the spectacular scenery of the Heads of Ayr. The return route follows an old railway line from Bracken Bay back to Greenan Castle and finishes along the seafront at Seafield.

Terrain: Footpaths and then beach walking to Heads of Ayr, along disused railway line and footpaths on return.

Distance: 12 km, duration 5 hrs, total ascent 50m to max ht of 40m.

Start point: Seafield car park, Ayr (free).

Carrick Castle to Shepherd's Point (Ardentinny)

We start along a short length of road which leads to a rough unmetalled track. This is followed by a forest track and finally a forest road. We return by the same route.

Terrain: Some shore walking and forest roads.  

Distance: 17½ km, duration 5½ hrs, total ascent negligible to max ht. 100 m.

Start point: Free parking space at Carrick Castle.

The river Etive is crossed by bridge. The route follows the Allt am Meir Teach to 766m and then turns west to Stob Choire Dheirg. The ridge is followed to the summit of Ben Starav. Descent will be down the north shoulder.

Terrain: Half the route is trackless and rocky. The ridge is narrow in places .  

Distance: 10 km, duration 8 hrs, total ascent 1078 m to max ht. 1078 m.

Start point: Well down Glen Etive.
