Programme of October Walks

Date 2006 Grade Title and Description

It is emphasised that ‘A’ grade walks are strenuous and should only be attempted by those with high standards of fitness and stamina and who are also properly equipped and clothed for the conditions.

Leaders will quite properly turn away those who do not meet these standards as they could create difficulties or danger for other members of the group

Beinn Bhuidhe

From A83, walk up Glen Fyne to the end, climb Ceann Garbh, continue to Beinn Bhuidhe, then Stac a’ Chuirn and Tom a’ Phiobaire. Descend and climb Clachan Hill.  Finally a steep descent down to the Power Station and the car park.  Planned return route from summit of Beinn Bhuidhe is weather dependant.

Terrain: Road and track on this in.  Path on the hill.  Steep descent on the way off.

Distance: 20 km, duration 8 hrs, total ascent 1500m to max. 948m.

Start point: Car park 100m before smokery at head of Loch Fyne.

Mullach Coire a’ Chuir - (possibly  - Top of the corrie on the rounded hill)

All open trackless with some steep ascents.

Terrain: Grassland, some boggy. Quite steeply undulating. Extensive views from tops if clear!

Distance 9½ km, duration 5½-6 hrs, total ascent 900m to max. 658m

Start point: Corrow Farm on Carrick Castle road 1½ km beyond Lochgoilhead.

Meall a’ Bhuiridh and Creise

From the White Corries Ski Centre follow chair lift route to plateau above Creag Dhubh NN257 520.  Head SW to N ridge of Meall a' Bhuirdh and ascend S to summit NN250 503.  Descend WSW on narrow ridge to col (930m) NN242 500.  Scramble to summit plateau of Creise head N to summit NN238 506.  Reverse route to return (or, if weather is favourable, a descent via the steep slabs of Stob A’ Ghlais Choire may be made).

Terrain: Hill / Mountain.

Distance: 11 - 13km, duration 6 - 7 hrs, total ascent 970m to max. 1108m.

Start point: White Corries Ski Centre.

Inverbeg to Tarbet via Glen Douglas

A two car linear walk through Glen Douglas picking up the rough track which follows the west highland railway round past Arrochar and back round to Tarbet.

Terrain: Initially on Tarmac road for the length of Glen Douglas followed by Landrover track which can be muddy at times

Distance 15 km, duration 5 hrs, total ascent 300m to max. 260m.

Start point: Inverbeg Inn car park to arrange distribution of cars. Permission obtained.

An alternative route to the summit of Ben Chonzie.  Meet at the Loch Turret Dam Car Park in Glen Turret - at the end of the minor road signposted "The Famous Grouse Experience" off the A85 as you enter Crieff from the west.

Terrain: Tracks and open hillside.

Distance 17 km, duration 8 hrs, total ascent 700m to max. 950m.

Start point: Glen Turret Dam car park.

Garadhan Forest and Conic Hill

Outward and return on a section of the West Highland Way, with a short steep ascent from the way to the Conic Hill summit.  Carried out at an easy pace.

Terrain: Forest Tracks and rough tracks through moorland.

Distance 14 km, duration 4½ hrs, total ascent 380m to max. 3606m.

Start point: Garadhan Forest car park.

Ardgartan to Lochgoilhead – via Corran Lochan

Initially metalled road from car park, then forest track to Corran Lochan.  Path from Corran Lochan to Stuckbeg then forest track to Lochgoilhead.  Return form Lochgoilhead by public transport (bus) to Ardgartan car park, please remember to bring money for the fare.

Terrain: Road, forest track, made up paths.

Distance 20 km, duration 6 hrs, total ascent 520m to max. 370m.

Start point: Ardgartan Forest walks car park.

Beinn Luibhean  (Hill of the little plant) (photo)

A steady climb up the glen following the burn to Bealach a’Mhargaidh before a grassy climb to a summit in the very heart of the Arrochar Alps.

Terrain: Partially along firm narrow path but mainly trackless moorland.

Distance 6 km, duration 4 hrs, total ascent 690m to max. 857m.

Start point: Lay-by on right of A83 road, just beyond road bridge half way up Glen Croe.
